Why Tango Democracy? Tango Democracy is
an opportunity for dancers to have a “say” in shaping their evening tango
experience. To me Tango is many things such as a giving and receiving
experience, an exploration of feelings, a listening and having something to say
in your dance. Similarly I believe there is benefit in exploring and
experiencing themes, innovations, and traditions relating to tango as a whole
group of dancers at a milonga. With a consensus of an
idea there is more unity and power to manifest the experience, because it is
something you want and choose to do. So with this said, Tango Democracy is
intended as a milonga experience created “Of the
People By the People and For the People”.
How is this possible? Tango
Democracy encourages interaction between the organizer, DJs, spectators and
tango dancers. For instance, we can vote (majority rules) to choose themes and
activities to put forth and into practice either the same night or for future
ones. In the beginning of the evening there will be a suggestion box available where
you, the dancers, can make theme night requests up until the time of the Raffle
intermission. Then immediately following
the Raffle a request will be selected from the Suggestion Box to be voted on
(majority rules) until we find a request that gets a majority vote. Possible
suggestions might include: cabaceo night (for part of
the evening), talent shows, poetry readings, live music, movies, bohemian
night, spanish invitations only to dance, tango games,
etc… Overall, I’d like to see Tango Democracy be a place to showcase the
talents of our community, an opportunity to learn and grow, and most of all,
Have Fun! So please start brainstorming
now and bring your ideas every 4th Saturday night! For those of you concerned about this Tango
Democracy idea, you need not worry as the evening will mostly be dedicated to social
dancing, with a few new ideas put into the mix. So in the spirit of Democracy,
I welcome you to enjoy and explore the wonderful world of tango possibilities
together! See you soon!
